More New Stuff
With the summer winding down (darn autumn...), it's time to get off the
beach and back behind the desk and get that New Items shelf
cleared off. Here's some of the new stuff we've recently brought in!
- Books!
- Parallax stuff!

- PIR Sensors,
for detecting them pesky humans...
- Basic
Stamp 1 Project boards. You see these yet? CHEAP, and useful!
- Retractable
Mini-B USB Cables. Ok, so they're not that new, but are they
convenient!
- Propeller
Chips - the 40 pin version. Nummy...
- BASIC
Stamp 2 Activity Kit. Want a nice & tidy package for
learning about the BS2?
- StampWorks
Experiment Kit. Want a full experimentation kit for the BS2?
- Mini-B
USB to Serial RS-232 adapters. Ummm... it converts USB to
serial RS-232. Really!
- The Propeller
Proto Board USB is just like the other one,
except has a built-in USB interface that can be used during
applications too!
- PropSTICK
USB is a very powerful micro on a tidy 40 pin IC, with
built-in USB jack. Whups! Sold out already, but more are coming..
- Have you seen these new Parallax LCDs? The Matrix Orbital
lines are top-line, but these Parallax units are a very decent
hobby-grade! Check out the 2x16
backlit, 2x16
non-backlit, and the 4x20 backlit.
- SX
Controller Board, but the guys as EFX-Tek. A powerful breakout
board, it is...
- 912MHz
RF Transceiver. These are cool.
- PICAXE
- Grand Wing Servo

- Miscellaneous
- The Dimension Engineering LVBoost
module takes a low voltage (as low as 0.5V!), and turns it into a
usable 2.2 to 5V (user selectable). And it's 85% efficient!
- Need more propellers. Propellers
are neat devices. This one is by the Guillows people, who have been
building rubber-band powered aircraft for decades.
- The AVR Atmel ATMega168-20PU
is the heart and soul of the Arduino and Freeduino SB. Here's a blank
version, ready to go!
- Another microcontroller, this time a PIC
18F4520-I/P. It's a great upgrade from a 16F877a!
- XBee
module interface boards for the MakingThings MAKE
Controller. This is just the bare PCB - you need your own XBee
module (which we're trying to get some of...)
- 11.5"
Servo wires. These are snipped from authentic Futaba servos, so
you know they're quality!
- Did you know MicroEngineering labs have some
nice LCD displays? They're not as technically superior as the
Matrix Orbital product, but these do have some useful features, at a
good price! We have both their 16x2
and 20x4
character displays, which talk I2C!
- Maxbotix has been getting some excellent praise lately
for their EZ0
Sonar Rangefinder, which is a very sensitive unit. A nice
complement to their EZ1!
FWHEW! Boy, that's a lot of product to get online. And there's a bit
more on the shelf yet to do yet, so stay tuned for more!

Glad to have you here! You'll find an introduction to the Freeduino
SB listed a post or two down
from
here. We've worked hard on our version of the excellent Arduino
project, and we hope you like it too.

Welcome to HVW Technologies!
Well, it's not like we just opened the doors, but we've
recently added a whole schwack of new products, so it feels like we're
adding a whole new isle of products to the store! And more to come.
That "new product" shelf needs a bit more attention before it's totally
cleaned off.
Like what new products? Let's see:

EFX-Tek & The Maker Faire
We're
back from our annual trip down
to the Maker
Faire in California. Cold this year... must've been because
it was 2 weeks earlier. It was a great time, and again, we saw lots of
BEAM fans. And BIG - there were almost 50% more people than last year,
and all of them were geeks, or geeks with families-in-tow! It was great!
We also bumped into the fine folks from EFX-Tek, who make a killer line
of affordable
special effects controllers. These guys are Parallax veterens
who've taken the Basic Stamp I, II, and SX to new levels with these
controllers that are ideal for driving solenoids, relays, and other
high-current loads.

We've told you about the Arduino already, right? No? Whups - go read
the post after this one first.
Done? Good. Ok, well Solarbotics has teamed up with the friendly goons
at the Freeduino
Project and made use of the open-source files from the
Arduino project to come up with a fully North-American made semi-kit
version of the Arduino Diecimila. It's 100% compatible with the
Diecimila, for only $26.00 each!
The key differences between our Freeduino and the Arduino are:
- This is a semi-kit. We do the
hard SMT soldering; you do the simple connector/socket soldering.
- Being a semi-kit, it's less expensive, and more
flexible. You don't have to install the pin header you don't need.
- A power switch! It's nice to be able to turn your
project off without yanking the power cord
- You have the option of using a mini-B jack (included)
or a large regular USB-B jack (it fits both)
- We added a spot for mounting an Analog-Reference
potentiometer (ARef trimpot) for scaling analog inputs
- There are ground floods between all I/O lines for
better noise suppression
- Increased power filtering to keep the FTDI USB chip
as happy as it can be
- Tx/Rx LED indicators out near the edge
- We've got a blue LED on our pin
13 indicator. Nobody else uses blue. Blue is best. Really.
- Now fully 16VDC input compliant!

HVWTechnologies
now is under
new management!
Mr. Mark
Hillier has a major new priority in his life (the type that crawls
around and drools on things), and approached us at Solarbotics to take
over the care and feeding of HVWTech.com! The transition has gone
smoothly, and now your orders are being processed and supported by the
fine staff at Solarbotics.
